Marine engineers moving ashore, or into superintendency, repeatedly ask the same two questions about PMP: does my experience count, and is the certification worth it in this industry. Both have reasonably clear answers.

Does drydocking and retrofit experience count?

Usually yes. PMI's eligibility requirement is experience leading and directing projects, and it is not industry-specific. A drydocking is a project by any definition — a defined scope, a fixed window, a critical path, a contract, a budget and a handover. So is a retrofit, a newbuild supervision, or an offshore campaign.

What matters is that you can document it: the project, your role, the dates, and what you were responsible for. Engineers under-claim here surprisingly often, describing a docking as maintenance rather than as the project they actually ran.

Eligibility in outline

• Four-year degree, 36 months leading projects, and 35 hours of project management education, or
• Secondary education, 60 months leading projects, and 35 hours of education
• The 2026 update widened what counts, admitting apprenticeships and training, and counts experience within a 10-year window
• A CAPM certification satisfies the 35-hour education requirement

From late Q4 2026, PMI is tightening what counts as live training — it will need to come from an Authorized Training Partner, a China REP or an accredited academic programme. Self-paced courses are unaffected, and training completed before the change remains valid.

The exam changed in July 2026 — and it changed in your favour

PMI issued a new Examination Content Outline effective 9 July 2026. The domain weightings moved substantially:

Business Environment — compliance, governance, benefits and value — more than tripled, and AI and sustainability entered the scenarios. For a marine engineer this is favourable ground: operating inside a regulatory framework, justifying expenditure as avoided loss, and dealing with certification bodies are already your working life.

What you will find familiar

• Risk management. Identification, response strategies and contingency map closely onto how you already think about machinery failure.
• Procurement. Contract types, variations, claims and warranty are drydock contracting under other names.
• Quality. Prevention over inspection, hold points, non-conformance — this is class survey and inspection practice.
• Business environment. Compliance as a constraint rather than an option is the way a ship already operates.

What usually needs work

• Earned value. CPI, SPI, EAC and TCPI are mechanical once learned, but they are unfamiliar and they appear reliably.
• Agile and hybrid. Backlogs, iterations and velocity have no shipboard equivalent, and they are examinable throughout.
• The answering style. This is the real difficulty. PMP questions describe a situation and offer four defensible actions, and the mark goes to the one a project manager would take first — usually analyse before acting, follow the plan before escalating, and never bypass integrated change control. An engineer's instinct to fix the problem directly is frequently the wrong answer.

Is it worth it?

For a role that involves running projects — superintendency, newbuild supervision, technical management, consultancy — it is widely recognised and it gives you the vocabulary the shore organisation uses. For a purely seagoing career it adds little. The honest test is whether the roles you are targeting ask for it.
