MEO Class IV & II

What is the MEO exam?

MEO certification evaluates competency for engine room operations at sea. Class IV is the entry-level certificate for watchkeeping engineers; Class II certifies second engineers.

• Thermodynamics & heat engines — cycles, boilers, heat exchangers
• IC engines & propulsion — 2T/4T, turbocharging, shafting, CPP
• Electrical & electronics — generators, motors, distribution, PLC basics
• Naval architecture basics — buoyancy, stability, dry-docking
• Automation & controls — instrumentation, alarms, safeties
• Marine legislation — SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, MLC

Exam pattern

• Objective and scenario questions; oral assessment for higher grades
• Typically 2–3 hours per paper; pass marks around 50% (varies by authority)
